South Carolina football DB Nick Emmanwori ejected vs. Tennessee after targeting penalty: COLUMBIA — South Carolina football defensive back Nick Emmanwori was ejected from the Gamecocks’ final home game of the season Saturday against No. 5 Tennessee after he was called for targeting Vols tight end Princeton Fant.

Emmanwori, a freshman from Irmo, has started at safety for the Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4 SEC) since senior R.J. Roderick’s injury in Week 1. Roderick has since entered the transfer portal, and South Carolina has struggled with depth at defensive back since the season-ending injury of David Spaulding.

The penalty came when Emmanwori lowered the crown of his helmet into Fant’s as he attempted to tackle the tight end after a 16-yard pass from Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker on third down and 5. Tennessee was given an automatic first down and finished the drive on a 27-yard field goal.

The Vols (9-1, 5-1) lead the all-time series with the Gamecocks 28-10-2 and have won the past three meetings. South Carolina’s last victory was in 2018, a 27-24 win in Columbia.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tennessee football is vying for its first 10-win season since 2007 as it plays South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The No. 5 Vols (9-1, 5-1 SEC) and Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4) kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Tennessee is a heavy favorite on the road, but there’s a lot on the line. Quarterback Hendon Hooker is in the thick of the Heisman Trophy hunt. Jalin Hyatt, a frontrunner for the Biletnikoff Award, was snubbed by South Carolina, his hometown team, during recruiting. And the Vols are trying to make the College Football Playoff.

This one is to Jalen Brooks, a 20-yard catch and run down the right sideline. The Vols bench may note that for the future, but there’s nothing they can do about it tonight.
