FBI alerted last year to Georgia school attack suspect

Victims

The four individuals killed have been identified as:

  • Mason Schermerhorn, 14, student
  • Christian Angulo, 14, student
  • Richard Aspinwall, teacher
  • Christina Irimie, teacher

Both Aspinwall and Irimie were math teachers; Aspinwall also served as an assistant football coach, according to the school’s website.

Nine others, including eight students and one teacher, were wounded and are expected to survive.

Suspected Shooter

The suspect has been identified as Colt Gray. He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.

Gray had been questioned last year by law enforcement after receiving several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting, but authorities found no probable cause for arrest at that time.

Timeline of the Shooting

  • Student Lyela Sayarath reported that the suspect left the Algebra 1 class around 9:45 a.m. and returned near the end of the class. Another student noticed the gun and refused to open the door for him.
  • The suspect then went to the adjacent classroom and opened fire.
  • The Barrow County Sheriff’s Department received the first reports of the shooting at 10:20 a.m., and law enforcement quickly responded along with two school resource officers on campus.
  • A resource officer confronted the shooter, who immediately surrendered and was taken into custody, according to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
  • All schools in the district were placed on lockdown, and additional police were dispatched as a precautionary measure.
  • The FBI and ATF later joined the investigation alongside local and state officials.

Investigation

Law enforcement reported no secondary incidents. The weapon used was an AR-platform rifle, specifically an AR-15-style rifle.

Earlier that morning, the school had received a phone threat warning of planned shootings at five schools, with Apalachee High being the first target. However, investigators found no evidence of other schools being targeted or of additional suspects involved.

The investigation is ongoing, and schools in the county will remain closed for the week.
